Missouri School District Apologizes After White Students Turn Backs on Black Team

The head of a Missouri school district condemned the “insensitive” behavior of a group of white students who were captured on video at a high school basketball game this week turning their backs to members of the opposing team, who were mostly black.

Video of the Monday incident at Warrensburg High School shows about 20 students in the stands with their backs turned as players from the other team were being introduced onto the court. One person who had his back turned is holding up a Donald Trump campaign sign, which prompted outrage from many who called the demonstration racist.

“I’m appalled by the nonsense I’ve just witnessed with my own two eyes,” said Toniaa Lakylia Nunn, who posted video of the incident on Facebook.

The Warrensburg school district said in a statement that those students “acted inappropriately and were insensitive toward our opponents.” “The Warrensburg R-VI School District does not condone these actions and apologizes to anyone who was offended by the actions of these students,” the statement said. “We will do everything we can to keep incidents like this from happening again.”

Warrensburg Superintendent Scott Patrick told the Kansas City Star that the Trump sign “was really the difference in what took this from something that was unsportsmanlike to something that was insensitive, not necessary and inappropriate.”
